Thanks to the generous support of Penn State's Digital Library Technologies group and the California Digital Library, food and lodging will be provided at no cost during the conference. Lodging will be single rooms in the UC-Berkeley dorms on "Unit 2" (see map at right) from August 15-17. You are responsible for your travel arrangements and off-campus lodging arrangements should you prefer the hotel experience to the dormitory experience.
CURATEcamp 2010: Micro-services and digital curation
Micro-services are a new approach to providing effective and sustainable digital curation solutions that has developed in reaction to the heavy-weight practices of the past. The primary notion underlying the concept is that complex behavior is an emergent property of the composition of simple, interoperable components. Thus, the micro-services approach is characterized by a controlling metaphor:
- Infrastructure as Lego bricks
A set of general principles:
- Modularity
- Granularity
- Orthogonality
- Parsimony
- Evolution
- Emergence
A set of preferences:
- Favor the small and simple over the large and complex
- Favor the minimally sufficient over the feature-laden
- Favor the configurable over the prescribed
- Favor the proven over the (merely) novel
A set of practices:
- Focus on outcomes, not mechanisms
- Define, decompose, recurse
- Approach sufficiency through a series of incrementally necessary steps
- Top-down design, bottom-up implementation
- Code to interfaces
- Early prototyping, frequent refactoring
- Don't hold on to what doesn't work; throw away

Cohosts: Pennsylvania State University and the California Digital Library
Penn State's Digital Library Technologies (DLT), a unit of Information Technology Services at Penn State, provides IT systems and services to support the teaching, research, and outreach mission of the Penn State University Libraries and the Institution. A core goal of Digital Library Technologies is advancing a joint initiative with the Penn State University Libraries to build an institutional content stewardship program. The program addresses extant and emerging digital content and asset management needs in areas such as digital library collections, scholarly communications, electronic records archiving, and e-science/e-research data management. Building on existing services and infrastructure, the program is developing an interoperable and extensible suite of discovery, preservation, curation, archival, and storage services.
The University of California Curation Center (UC3) at the California Digital Library (CDL) is a creative partnership bringing together the expertise and resources of the CDL, the ten University of California campuses, and the broader international curation community. We foster collaborative analysis, projects, and solutions to ensure the long-term viability and usability of curated digital content.
